Aestheticist Afterlives examines the rich “afterlives” of Victorian aestheticism and decadence (in their British and Continental variations) across a range of twentieth-century texts (novels, magazines, and manga) and films from around the world. Building on foundational criticism by Perry Meisel, Rita Felski, and Frank Kermode, as well as on significant recent interventions by scholars like Douglas Mao, Vincent Sherry, and Kristen Mahoney, our panelists examine “aestheticism” as it reverberates throughout such unlikely and surprising sites as contemporary Japanese manga and the postcolonial novel–right into the global present.
